Stem Cell Therapy for Pets

Grover, a 4-year-old German Shepard, may have a new lease on life thank to an injection of stem cells that is hoped to bring range of motion back to a bum knee. Treatments to the leg have helped the dog move around, and seem to have helped some of the pain, but the dog still suffers.

The owners hope this expensive new therapy will help, but admit that they are unsure of the process. This will be the first time that doctors have used stem cells from a subject to try and repair damaged cells, but there are growing numbers of pet owners willing to try experimental therapies like this one to help their furry friends.

Researchers currently rely on animal models to try and predict the behavior of stem cells in humans. Mice and other animals with similar genetic profiles have been used to test the applications of stem cells. While there is a gap between these animals and human patients, science have a growing body of evidence suggesting that this testing will lead to real results soon.

For those considering the therapy for their own pets, it’s important to manage your own expectations. Stem cells are extremely potent, but their use is still very much experimental. The price can be high, and the turnaround time can be slower than anticipated. Some treatments can be conducted same day, others require repeat visits and off-site lab work.

The most important take away is that pet owners increasingly have more options to deal with pet illness.

Sasha Bakhru Explains the Amazing Power of the Ganges

The River Ganges stretches along 4 miles of Indian coast, and it’s the bathing grounds for thousands of visitors from around the world. It’s also one of the most polluted rivers in the world, yet time after time people are drawn to its waters to bathe and swim. Perhaps the most remarkable part, they walk away disease free. What is it about this river that explains its pure properties?
E. Coli
In separate tests of water samples that were 15 days old, 8-years-old and 16-years-old, E. Coli survival rates were at near zero. In fact, the survival rate of E. Coli was greater in boiled water than it was in the contents of the river Ganges. The river actually contains microbes that consume bacteria that scientists call bacteriophages.
Biological Oxygen Demand
The Ganges has an above average ability to absorb oxygen, up to 15-25 the times the power of other rivers. Because of this, the river is able to handle higher amounts of pollution by processing bio waste. Scientists have tested the waters and found that as much as 60% of bio waste was removed within an hour.
Standing Water
Jarred water from the river Ganges doesn’t seem to go bad, no matter how long it stands. It is said that the British East Indian Company used water from the river Ganges because it was able to stay sweet and fresh for longer than other sources.  The true reason for the Ganges’ ability to retain oxygen and kill bacteria is hard to pinpoint, but this amazing river has had these properties all throughout recorded history.

Sasha Bakhru Explains the Promise of Stem Cell Research

Terminally differentiated cells have processes in the body that are set in stone and cannot change. Other cells are useful for their ability to replenish themselves, or rebuild cells for a different purpose. Known as “stem” cells, these cells represent a huge opportunity for medical scientists seeking to cure diseases that were previously incurable.
Biological Manipulation
Scientists have discovered that the inclusion of RNA can actually affect how a cell grows. This achievement is hoped to influence drug making by effectively targeting certain cells. One of the drawbacks to current pharmacology is the shotgun approach to treating disease, evidenced by the many side effects a medication can carry. Through specific cell targeting, it’s hoped that doctors can do more damage to the disease with less harmful effects for the patient.
Extracting Cells
Embryonic stem cells are the most controversial, and they typically come from early stage embryos. These cells can take the form of anything a growing embryo may need, which makes them valuable to researchers who hope to regenerate organs or cure cancer. How we harvest these cells has changed, as we discover methods for growing embryonic cells in a petri-dish.
Stem Cell Therapy
The ideal future of medicine will use stem cells to rebuild damaged tissues. Scientists hope that we will be able to take skin cells and re-engineer them to fit with other parts of the body, effectively using the same regenerative properties that heal us after a cut.
Conclusions
The world of stem cell research is growing, and we are beginning to find less invasive methods for harvesting these important cells. Future research will try more of these procedures with humans, but for now testing is quite promising in the field of stem cell research.

How Science Can Help Lead Us to New Applications

Science is something that we utilize each and every day without even realizing it.  It is because of science that we have so many different things around us.  The process of science leads us through a variety of practices that can result in the development of new applications such as an application that can detect fingerprints, test for diseases, and so on.  It all starts with coming up with an idea, and testing that idea to improve upon something.  This pursuit of making everything better is what drives the science field.
Science is all about testing ideas through a variety of facets.  The whole idea in testing ideas is that we first and foremost thing about all of the different benefits and outcomes that may be possible in an idea we come up with.  We then explore and discover if it is possible to implement these different ideas, and communicate, analyze, and improve upon what we find out through that testing.  It is this process that has led us to understanding DNA, and our overall chemical make-up.  This has led to applications such as facial recognition software, genetic mapping, stem cell research, and many other things.

Biomedical Engineering, Learning Through Extensive Research

If you are someone who has a lot of interest in biomedical engineering, then you need to be made aware that there is a lot of extensive research that goes into learning about it.  When you have come to the conclusion that, from an education standpoint, this is the path you want to take; you should take it on one hundred percent.
Learning about any type of engineering can be extremely challenging.  Biomedical engineering though, including things such as stem cell advancements, can complicate things even further.  What you are going to have to do is to find a very reliable subject matter expert that is going to allow you to utilize his or her past research to better understand everything around the topic.  This is going to help you in learning about things such as rat nueral stem cells, and how they can help in the path towards education and mastering of the topics.  Learning from someone who has a resume which you can validate as true can make all of the difference between being successful in your studies, and failing due to a lack of reliable source information.
Article submitted by Sasha Bakhru.  If you are looking for someone who has a tried and true resume of success and expertise in the field of biomedical engineering, look no further.  The research of Sasha Bakhrustands on its own as some of the best work out there in the area.  Take the time and
